The Incoherence of Our Time
Understanding the fragmentation that defines the current moment, and what it calls for
By Kris of Tap Coherence LLC
We are living through a period of profound societal Incoherence. Understanding its sources, and what Coherence calls for in response, is one of the most important tasks of our time.
Something has gone wrong with the Coherence of our collective life. This is not a partisan observation, it is visible across the political spectrum, across cultures, across the developed and developing world. The institutions that once provided shared ground for public discourse have lost their authority. The information systems that once created shared reality have fragmented into competing narratives. The trust that once enabled collective action has eroded. And the complexity of the challenges we face has outpaced the Coherence of our collective response.
The sources of this Incoherence are multiple and interacting. The digital revolution has created information systems of extraordinary reach and speed, but also of extraordinary fragmentation. Social media algorithms optimize for engagement rather than truth, creating information environments that reinforce existing beliefs rather than challenging them, that amplify outrage rather than understanding, that fragment rather than integrate.
At the same time, the institutions that once provided coherent frameworks for collective life, governments, universities, media organizations, religious institutions, have lost much of their authority. This is not entirely a bad thing: many of these institutions were themselves sources of Incoherence, maintaining their authority through exclusion and distortion rather than genuine Coherence. But the loss of institutional authority without the emergence of new Coherence-creating structures has left a vacuum that is being filled by fragmentation.
The result is a society that is simultaneously more connected and more fragmented than at any previous point in history. We have more information than ever before, and less shared understanding. We have more communication channels than ever before, and less genuine dialogue. We have more technological capability than ever before, and less collective capacity to deploy it wisely.
What does Coherence call for in response to this situation? Not a return to the false Coherence of the past, the Coherence maintained by exclusion, by the suppression of diversity, by the concentration of authority in institutions that did not deserve it. But a new Coherence, one that can hold genuine diversity within a larger framework of shared values and shared reality, that can integrate multiple perspectives without collapsing them into uniformity, that can create the conditions for collective intelligence to emerge at the scale our challenges require.
This is not a small task. It is, in many ways, the defining task of our time. And it begins, as all Coherence begins, with understanding. With seeing clearly what is actually happening, why it is happening, and what the principle of Coherence calls for in response.
