Heightened States of Consciousness are not rare anomalies, they are the very ground from which humanity's greatest discoveries, innovations, and breakthroughs have emerged. Understanding what they are, and how to cultivate them, may be one of the most important inquiries of our time.
What is a Heightened State of Consciousness (HSC)? It is a state in which one's awareness, perception, and capacity for understanding are significantly elevated beyond ordinary waking consciousness. In HSC, the boundaries of what we can perceive, feel, know, and create expand, sometimes dramatically.
These states are not the exclusive domain of mystics or meditators. They are experienced by scientists in the moment of breakthrough, by artists in the flow of creation, by athletes in peak performance, by leaders in moments of profound clarity, and by ordinary people in extraordinary moments of love, grief, or wonder. They are, in fact, far more common than we acknowledge, and far more important.
HSC creates an "aware space" where information from the brain, spirit, and what I call infinite knowledge, which includes sensory input, incredible intelligence, insights, memory access, emotions, feelings, intuition and much more, are brought together.
This level of information synthesis, integration and analysis is key for discovering new areas to connect unrelated concepts, a hallmark of what we call the "creative process".
Many scientific and innovative breakthroughs have been the result of an individual in HSC, where they intuitively and/or intellectually follow and connect disparate pieces of knowledge and experiences, to understand and reach a new theory or invention. Often going against existing social conditioned beliefs or concepts, thereby breaking through limitations.
While unconscious thought can generate a spontaneous "aha" moment, heightened conscious awareness allows us to evaluate and experience the context, depth and even the practicality of an idea. Our ability to understand and analyze a new concept, identify its potential and flaws, or refine it, is based on our state of consciousness and knowledge.
This can often be the stage where an idea moves from a momentary insight to a potential viable invention, discovery and assessment. And, when an individual (or a team) experience HSC, they access and transcend ways beyond the usual capabilities which may fall short. As a result, deepening their understanding beyond previous preconceived ideas, to reach and create novel innovations.
It's funny how one's consciousness can motivate or nudge us with a deep feeling of knowing, dedication, perseverance, excitement or curiosity; which drives an innovator/scientist/student to commit years to research and questioning, or for an inventor and entrepreneur to persist through countless failures, including the disbelief of others.
Without a certain level of consciousness and personal will united from within, the long and difficult path of innovation or problem solving would be nearly impossible to sustain.
Rarely do we focus on the actual force that is driving from within a pioneer, yet when they reach a solution or breakthrough, they can change minds, industries and humanity. Once they get past the resistance.
This is why the topic of consciousness is not something that can be fully defined by language alone or even in this paper. It needs to be explored and experienced first hand, in its endless ways. It is an inextricable part of who we are. When one is fortunate to experience HSC, it always leaves the human or persona's mind astounded, in awe, blown away, and words fall short. Only the experience remains relevant.
When in HSC, one is aware and attentive of their internal and external world. In HSC, one's awareness and relationship with their inner world is Coherent, with a certain clarity that has a deep abiding presence. This state enables them to articulate and observe their inner world experience, and to hold a much clearer lens as they view the outside world with greater breadth and context, beyond limited or unconscious projections, assumptions or sudden desires.
As a result, allowing them to choose meaningful actions through discernment, to reflect the most Coherent relationship with themselves and in relation to what is happening and appearing on the outside. Inevitably when in such a state our conclusions, choices, actions and results will differ.
Self-awareness and reflection is core and exists in some of the oldest philosophies about consciousness, which modern psychology has drawn from in the past 100 or so years. How aware is someone about their inner thoughts, feelings, and beliefs? In HSC someone can: recognize, manage and articulate their feelings and emotions often before and while they happen, rather than being taken over and reacting from them; reflect on their intentions through integrity to create space for objective examination before a choice of action; and distinguish and discover their conditioned biases by practicing self-awareness and reflection, becoming vigilant in regards to bias in all its forms.
HSC is often tied to vigilance, which helps one stay far more present in a given moment. In HSC one listens deeply, with full presence, able to hear with all their being of what is being shared (or not shared), including words, sentiment and much more. They naturally respect and understand what they are hearing. Their questions are formed from listening fully and may enable a deeper and broader conversation towards an expansive understanding for all involved. They know how to hold space for themselves and others.
HSC naturally creates a heightened state of awareness that connects one with the environment and all that is around them. If outdoors, they are keenly aware of the air, sky, smells, sounds of nature which express what is present and happening. If around people, they can sense the vibe of a room or a person's state clearly and without bias.
HSC naturally extends awareness towards other beings and people. The capacity for empathy expands in novel ways. An individual in HSC is highly empathetic, because they are deeply attuned to the energy, feelings and perceptions of those around them, including their own Self. Hence, attunement to a space, environment and people is experienced at a much broader and deeper level.
Empathetic intelligence, the ability to recognize and understand not just one's own emotions and feelings, but also the feelings and emotions of others, deepens profoundly in HSC. One can sense what the vibe of a space or person is holding at any given day or time. The joy and grief in another is felt deeply within them as well. In one's clearest and deepest conscious state, empathy and compassion beckons them to connect to the core of consciousness, helping others expand beyond limited ideas, cut through barriers that create division and hold us back from heightened experiences of connection and solidarity.
At the core of HSC, is an indescribable experience of liberation, deep abiding love, enormous empathy, inner joy, and complete union with what cannot be described nor named, that is accessible and within us all.
And… that which is within us all is limitless, Infinite, without definition and yet, defines!
