What Is Coherence?

An introduction to the foundational principle

Coherence is not a single idea, it is a lens through which the patterns underlying intelligence, reality, and human potential become visible. This essay introduces the concept and explores why it matters now.

The word Coherence comes from the Latin cohaerere, to stick together, to hold as one. In physics, Coherence describes the degree to which waves maintain a consistent phase relationship, enabling interference and the emergence of order from apparent chaos. In everyday language, we speak of a coherent argument, a coherent plan, a coherent person, meaning one whose parts hold together, whose elements align, whose expression is clear and consistent.

But Coherence, as I have come to understand it through three decades of inquiry, is something deeper than any of these uses suggest. It is not merely a property of systems, it is a foundational principle shaping what becomes possible. It is the condition under which intelligence can function at its highest level, under which reality reveals its deepest patterns, under which human potential can fully express itself.

Consider what happens when Coherence is present. A team that is coherent, aligned in purpose, clear in communication, trusting in relationship, can accomplish what no collection of talented individuals working at cross-purposes could achieve. A mind that is coherent, attentive, clear, integrated, can perceive patterns and generate insights that a fragmented mind cannot access. A society that is coherent, sharing enough common ground to act collectively, can navigate challenges that would overwhelm a fractured one.

Now consider what happens when Coherence is absent. The same team, the same talent, the same resources, but fragmented by misalignment, distorted by poor communication, eroded by distrust, produces a fraction of what it could. The same mind, scattered by distraction, narrowed by fear, or clouded by unresolved conflict, misses what is right in front of it. The same society, fragmented by competing narratives, eroded trust, and incoherent information systems, finds itself unable to respond to the very challenges it faces.

Coherence is not a destination. It is not a state to be achieved once and maintained forever. It is a dynamic quality, something that must be cultivated, maintained, and renewed. It can be increased or decreased. It can be designed for or designed against. And it operates at every scale: from the quantum level of physical reality, to the level of individual consciousness, to the level of organizations, societies, and civilizations.

This is why Coherence matters now. We are living through a period of profound Incoherence, in our information systems, in our institutions, in our collective capacity to respond to the challenges we face. And yet we are also living through a period of extraordinary possibility, in our technologies, in our understanding of consciousness and reality, in our capacity to design systems that amplify rather than diminish human potential.

The question is not whether Coherence is possible. It is always possible. The question is whether we understand it well enough to cultivate it, in ourselves, in our organizations, in our societies, and in the technologies we are building. That is what this inquiry is about.
